Hunter Biden: The Legal Background
President Joe Biden used his presidential powers to protect Hunter Biden from punishment in the criminal cases he was accused of. These cases involved charges related to both a gun incident and tax violations.
All of these incidents began a few weeks before Hunter Biden was set to face punishment after his trial. This was especially significant after his guilty plea on tax charges, which had raised concerns regarding potential federal penalties.
If we examine Joe Biden’s statements, he had previously assured both the authorities and the public that he would not use his presidential powers for personal gain or to benefit his family members. These promises were made clear during his public addresses.
However, on Sunday evening, Biden contradicted his earlier vows by sparing his son from facing possible federal penalties. These included charges stemming from the gun case and tax convictions. Critics have referred to this action as sheer hypocrisy, highlighting the apparent inconsistency in his stance.
A President Words on Question
Backtracking from his previous statements, Biden had previously indicated that he would not pardon Hunter or reduce his penalties under any circumstances. This was particularly emphasized in the context of the ongoing legal cases in Delaware and California, where Hunter was involved.
Hunter was facing multiple potential punishments after his trial for both gun and tax charges, with these events unfolding just two months before Donald Trump was set to return to the White House. Amid these long-running legal proceedings, the saga surrounding Hunter Biden’s case seemed to be drawing to a close.
Publicly, Hunter Biden also disclosed that he was under federal investigation as early as December 2020, a fact he acknowledged shortly after his father’s victory in the 2020 presidential election. This information became a focal point in the ongoing legal discourse.
It was around June, before the election, that Biden firmly denied any possibility of pardoning or providing compensation for his son in relation to the ongoing legal issues. As the trial in Delaware proceeded, Biden reaffirmed his position, stating to reporters, “I abide by the jury’s decision. I will do that, and I will not pardon him.”
Biden Pardon Statement
In a statement President Biden said he had kept his words not interfere with the justice Department’s decision making saying “I kept my word even as I have watched my son being selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted… It is clear that Hunter was treated differently.”
“No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son – and that is wrong.”
President Biden continues “There has been an effort to break Hunter…. In trying to break Hunter they’ve tried to beak me – and there’s no reason to believe it will stop here. Enough is enough.”
He goes on to say “I believe in the justice system, but as I have wrestled with this, I also believe raw politics has infected this process.”
“and it led to a miscarriage of justice – and once I made this decision this weekend, there was no sense in delaying it further.”
It Ends by saying “I hope Americans will understand why a father and a President would come to this decision.”
Hunter Biden Statement
There’s also been a statement in response from Hunter Biden. He says “I have admitted and taken responsibility for my mistakes during the darkest days of my addiction…”
“Mistakes that have been exploited to publicly humiliate and shame me and my family for political sport.”
He continues despite all of this “I have maintained my sobriety for more than five years because of my deep faith and unwavering love and support of my family and friends.”
